Hesther Rippy Full-time Volunteer Director

  • Co-founder of the Literacy Center, along with William Rippy
  • Full-time Volunteer Director
  • Provides ongoing support and counsel for each department
  • Liaison with FLC Inc. and other literacy-related organizations
  • Supervises and fosters public awareness of center programs and needs
  • Supervises staff and organizes all programs
  • Coordinates language programs

Nancy Weitzel Assistant Director

  • Responsible for weekly instruction of new and returning tutors, ensuring new tutors understand the importance of developing a relationship of trust with the student, and ensuring that the student is making adequate progress using the center curriculum
  • Responsible for keeping computer records up to date and for tracking tutors and students
  • Tracks both tutor and student attendance
  • Assists the Reading Program Director in coordinating tutor-student relationships
  • Recruits volunteer tutors/teachers and students

Nathan Hancock Floor Manager

  • Coordinates all tutor-student relationships, ensuring that students and tutors and appropriately matched according age and skill levels
  • Ensures that the reading program runs efficiently on a daily basis, which includes finding appropriate substitutes for students whose tutors cannot attend
  • Recruits volunteer tutors, teachers and students
  • Tracks both tutor and student attendance, logging in all volunteer hours
  • Responsible for organizing and filing student reading records

Evelyn Fannin & George Fannin Math Program Staff

  • Evaluates students entering the program
  • Designs curriculum and determines which curriculum will best address each student's needs
  • Coordinates all tutor-student relationships, ensuring that students and tutors are appropriately matched according to age and skill levels
  • Tracks progress of students through periodical evaluations

Charlotte Tunnell Early Reading Program Director

  • Responsible for evaluating students entering the program and for determining which curriculum best suits each student's needs
  • Responsible for Early Reading curriculum
  • Conducts periodic evaluations to determine student progress
  • Recruits volunteer tutors/teachers and students
  • Coordinates schedules between teachers and students

Stephen Wood Librarian

  • Responsible for maintenance of the center's library, including shelving, re-shelving and sorting books
  • Maintains barcode file
  • Grade-levels books so patrons can access age-appropriate materials

Chantal John, Tacia Jarvis, John Zebley Evaluations

  • Specially trained in the Lexia evaluation software
  • Evaluates all students entering the reading program using the Lexia testing software
  • Prepares and relays statistical information from evaluations to parents/guardians of students and to the Reading Program Director and Assistant
  • Schedules evaluations for new students
  • Conducts regular six-month evaluations to determine student progress

Brenda Thurman, Deborah Gulledge Transitional Program

  • Responsible for Transitional Program curriculum
  • Coordinates tutor-student relationships, determining which tutor's skills will best address each student's needs
  • Recruits volunteer tutors/teachers and students for Emergent and Reading
  • Schedules evaluations for new students

Jillian Ditty Front Desk Receptionist

  • Greets parents, students, and tutors
  • Enters computer records
  • Tracks attendance
  • Handles phone calls
